The United States of Coca-Cola

Why is an American businessman in Pyongyang pitching America’s most famous soft drink to the world’s most inhospitable and politically incorrect marketplace? Because, surprisingly, North Korea is ready to buy. Eager even, eager enough to let the world know, allowing a reporter to sit in on its Coca-Cola discussions with Schulze in Pyongyang, recording everything.

Och i god Bastiat-anda (or is it?) så ses handel som ett sätt att hålla sig på god fot med omgivningen:

“Coke is strategic. I hope that Coke will serve as a bridge for relations between the two governments,” Park told Schulze’s group,

“People say this is the leadership looking to benefit itself, and I would say yes, that is absolutely true. If you look at any economic reform and opening it’s about trying to create a kind of economy that allows the current leadership to stay in place,” Schulze said. “It doesn’t negate the fact that selfish ambition can still drive positive change and development, particularly in the economy, which can make a real difference in the lives of North Koreans.”

The Philosophy of Andy Warhol, via Kottke:

What's great about this country is that America started the tradition where the richest consumers buy essentially the same things as the poorest. You can be watching TV and see Coca-Cola, and you know that the President drinks Coke, Liz Taylor drinks Coke, and just think, you can drink Coke, too. A Coke is a Coke and no amount of money can get you a better Coke than the one the bum on the corner is drinking. All the Cokes are the same and all the Cokes are good. Liz Taylor knows it, the President knows it, the bum knows it, and you know it.

Aborter första halvåret 2011

Ur Socialstyrelsens Aborter i Sverige 2011 januari-juni (pdf):

Planekonomins tilltugg

Ur Washington Post om Department of Justice-konferenser, via Radley Balko:

The event that raised the most eyebrows — the 2009 legal training conference in Washington sponsored by Justice’s Executive Office for Immigration Review — was held three months after the Ogden memo. It featured 250 assorted muffins for $4,200, or $16.80 [runt 115 kronor] apiece, and $2,880 [runt 20 000 kronor] for 300 cookies and brownies, along with various pastries and snacks.

Också ur artikeln:

Overall, in 2008 and 2009, the Justice Department held or participated in 1,832 conferences at a cost of $121 million, the report said.

Streisandeffekten i vardagen

- BBFC (British Board of Film Classification)":

Just watched and only because it is banned and therefore had to seek it out and say a big ' f#@k ' u to any board who try to stop me from watching a film unless of course it involves snuff, real animal killings or kids.

When a film is deemed so heinous by the BBFC that a certificate is refused outright, fans of extreme cinema are naturally intrigued; I know that when I'm told I can't see a movie because it might possibly damage my fragile little mind, I'm all the more keen to view it, curious to see if my sensibilities (and stomach) can withstand the challenge.

Also known under the title Grotesque: Unrated Version which was what the version I saw was called this Japanese extreme torture horror flick was directed by Kôji Shiraishi & was recently banned here in the UK which has predictably had the effect that everyone now wants to see it because it's 'banned'

I wanted to see "Grotesque" because BBFC banned this Japanese torture extravaganza in UK.

Well, its now been banned in the UK as of a few days ago. And as with the legendary British Board Of Film Censors onslaught on horror movies in 1984, this will of course make it a much more sought after movie now than if they'd left it well alone.

Everybody was hyped when Gurotesuku was banned in the United Kingdom...me included.

I watched "Grotesque" because of the hype around it and because it had been banned.

Well, having heard mention of the BBFC banning on Twitter, old school curiosity got the better of me.

I just watched this movie reason why was because it's banned and i wanted to see what's so bad about it.

Being an avid fan of the 80's video nasty era where many a film was banned due to it's content (long gone are the days), I was intrigued to know what - in this day and age - had upset the BBFC so much that they warranted banning Grotesque.

Well well, the campaign for this flick was well chosen. The movie came straight from Japan and was stated as Banned In The UK.

This movie has a lot of hype around it in the horror circles on the net, mostly because it's banned in the UK.

This film has been in the news recently as it is a rare (non-pornographic) film that is denied a certificate by the BBFC, effectively banning for sale, rental, showing or broadcast in any form in the UK. Naturally, I tracked it down to see what all the fuss was about.

If you a fan of Devils rejects, Vacancy and the like check it out but if you are like me a little and like at least a little mental stimulation with your gore fix skip this one.

For me, there is no redeeming factors to this movie besides some production value and the debate it will create around censorship and going to far in film. Regardless of the film just being mean spirit, the film is actually just a bad film.

Have seen a lot of horrors and this isn't one of them, no thrill, no build up and certainly no suspense.

Gurotesuku is a film which will now be sought after & become notorious for nothing more than a bunch of people saying it should be banned in the UK for no good reason as far as I can see & quite frankly it doesn't really deserve the publicity since it's not that good & has no real story, artistic value or social relevance beyond two people being tortured & eventually murdered.

Anyway, it's bad, but not that bad.The horror isn't very cringe-worthy, (where as some of the effects are), and it certainly doesn't justify being banned.

Thats how I saw the film. Not as a story of any value (as it doesn't really have any plot) but as a vehicle for showing what a good effects team can achieve with a few pounds of latex and a bucket of fake blood.

it really has no plot, and no visuality to speak about, i guess the film crew relied on the snuff-ish scenes to make up for the costs, because other than them, the movie is devoid of anything at all worth mentioning.

"Grotesque" had lots of potential to be so much more than it turned out to be, but it faltered on a weak storyline and the director's need to show tacky sex scenes. When the movie ended, I was left with a sense of 'was that really it? This movie was banned, really? Come on...' and I was disappointed by the overall movie.

GROTESQUE is a big, big bore. Yet another pointless freakshow that horror geeks can boast about having seen. "Oh my God, man. The dude cuts this chick's nipples off. It's brutal, man." Yeah, yeah, yeah. Whatever.

Maybe I'm getting old, but I really can't work out anymore what or who this type of film is made for.

How can you screw up this badly? I always say, if you're making a shocking gore movie and it isn't close to 1963's original splatter film, Blood Feast then you shouldn't even bother. If you can't match a very cheesy movie with laughably bad effects which did start the sub genre, then you probably have no business making movies.

I can only think that maybe exploration of a sick mind (such as August Underground) was the point to put across but unfortunately it fails as a pointless exercise (whereas August Underground worked for what it was) I have given the film a 5 star rating as adequate effort to make a film has been put in...I just don't understand why though.

The fx are good, realistic but not excellent, and the plot and motivations of the bad dude were so stupid that you cant take the gore serious, so the scenes failed. Yes, its brutal but its overall a let down. [passande användarnamn: ultra_tippergore]

If you want to watch a non-story line, pure gore, pointless movie, Grotesque is for you.

having seen many horror movies,i don't think the effects looks real but it's somewhat okay!saw and hostel are somewhat better than this,as they have a story or plot but this one lacks on that and being directed without having an idea and just to make some money!that's all,if you like horror, this isn't for you! Hope it helps! *1/2*

Back to the main story though, this is a terrible film. 2/10 with one point added for the wtf moment at the end. 3/10.

If your curiosity just needs to be satiated, then by all means, check out "Grotesque." Everyone else take my advice and stay far, far away.

Shequita Walker, 40, suffers from severe joint pain and has a limited range of motion. For several years, Walker has enjoyed sitting in a metal chair in the vacant lot next to her apartment complex on Boulevard. Walker says she isn't on the sidewalk or in anyone's way, and has spent many hot afternoons waiting on the ice cream truck to drive by so she can buy a cold treat.
But on April 21, an Atlanta police officer asked her to move when she was in her regular spot, next to three other people. Walker responded by telling Officer Kenneth Thomas she was within her rights to sit outside, and that other Atlanta officers had not had a problem with it.
"She did stand her ground," attorney Dan Grossman told the AJC. "She clearly gave him defiance and some attitude."
Thomas then grabbed Walker's wrist and twisted her arm, causing her to fall to the concrete, unable to get up on her own, Walker said. Another Atlanta officer helped Walker to her feet and to the back of a patrol car. An ambulance was called to transport Walker to Grady Memorial Hospital, where she received treatment for a shoulder injury sustained when she hit the ground, Grossman said.

But while every national culinary tradition has something to applaud, such traditions are the product of limits. They come about because different foods work best in different climates and circumstances. While much of the pleasure of eating out or travelling is in discovering new foods, combinations and methods, chefs should never be beholden to tradition any more than national and regional cultures should be preserved in aspic. While you rightly say that chefs can ‘serve as an important bridge with other cultures’, ultimately there should just be one great body of culinary practice and ingredients - the world - from which everyone can share, and mix-and-match to find pleasurable new experiences.

If you want to do the right thing, give up on locavorism and organics über alles and become a globally conscious grocery buyer. This should be the age of the "cosmovore" -- cosmopolitan consumers of the world's food.

A Catholic school student who identifies herself by the avatar name “Nekochan” started an unofficial library of banned books that she runs out of her locker at school. She began to lend books to her classmates when her school banned a long list of classic titles, including The Canterbury Tales, Paradise Lost and Animal Farm.

Och en sidoregel - ur artikeln:

When I was eleven, I bought a banned books poster at a school book fair and proceeded to read each of the titles on the poster, crossing each one out as I went. It still hangs on the wall of my childhood bedroom.

Imagine you've got a shiny computer that is identical to a Macbook Air, except that it has the energy efficiency of a machine from 20 years ago. That computer would use so much power that you'd get a mere 2.5 seconds of battery life out of the Air's 50 watt-hour battery instead of the seven hours that the Air actually gets. That is to say, you'd need 10,000 Air batteries to run our hypothetical machine for seven hours.

Moores lag redux

A new study done by an engineering professor at Stanford University has found that the energy efficiency of computers doubles roughly every 18 months, and has done so since the very first general purpose computer, the Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer (ENIAC) that was built in 1956.

Every decade, the cost per lumen (unit of useful light emitted) falls by a factor of 10, the amount of light generated per LED package increases by a factor of 20, for a given wavelength (color) of light.

There is already available an excluded-from-the-ban version of incandescents from Amazon.com and online bulb sites that only cost about double of already cheap normal bulbs, namely "rough service" bulbs that have beefier filaments and are thus *less* efficient than standard bulbs.

Too much alcohol, drugs, and sex, coupled with poor hygiene, can be a health risk at festivals, an expert is warning.

Criminals are rational. A mugger is a mugger for the same reason I am a professor-because that profession makes him better off, by his own standards, than any other alternative available to him. Here, as elsewhere in economics, the assumption of rationality does not imply that muggers (or economics professors) calculate the costs and benefits of available alternatives to seventeen decimal places-merely that they tend to choose the one that best achieves their objectives.

Verone said he "exercised all the alternatives" before planning to rob the Gastonia bank, which he chose at random, for a dollar, according to reports. As the day approached, Verone paid his last month's rent, donated his furniture and moved into a Hampton Inn. And on the morning of June 9, before hailing a cab to the bank, he mailed a letter to the Gaston Gazette.

"When you receive this a bank robbery will have been committed by me. This robbery is being committed by me for one dollar," he wrote, wanting people to understand that the motive for his crime was medical, not monetary. "I am of sound mind but not so much sound body."

Turingtestet i vardagen

The Turing test is a test of a machine's ability to exhibit intelligent behavior. In Turing's original illustrative example, a human judge engages in a natural language conversation with a human and a machine designed to generate performance indistinguishable from that of a human being. All participants are separated from one another. If the judge cannot reliably tell the machine from the human, the machine is said to have passed the test.

“WISCONSIN appears to be in the driver’s seat en route to a win, as it leads 51-10 after the third quarter. Wisconsin added to its lead when Russell Wilson found Jacob Pedersen for an eight-yard touchdown to make the score 44-3 ... . ”

Those words began a news brief written within 60 seconds of the end of the third quarter of the Wisconsin-U.N.L.V. football game earlier this month. They may not seem like much — but they were written by a computer.

A woman in the state of New Mexico is asking cops to cover her medical bill [$1122, motsvarande cirka 7400 kronor] after she was ordered by the Metro Narcotics Agency of Las Cruces, NM to undergo a costly cavity search — at her own expense.

(Via Radley Balko)

The previous version of HP Sauce contained 2.1g of salt per 100g. The new version contains 1.3g – but fans claim the change has come at a high price. They say it just doesn't taste the same.
/.../
Heinz made the changes after signing up to the Coalition Government's Responsibility Deal, a programme of targets for reducing the level of fats and salts used by food manufacturers. The key pledges include an agreement to reducing salt in food so people eat 1g less per day by end of 2012.

“Hot dog” means a whole, cured, cooked sausage that is skinless or stuffed in a casing, may be served in a bun or roll, and is also known as a bologna, frank, frankfurter, furter, garlic bologna, knockwurst, red hot, Vienna, or wiener.

Tecken i tiden

Intressant i samma vackert lik-anda - från I used to be disgusted, now I try to be amused:

A patient had surgery at our hospital. Some time postoperatively he had a cardiac arrest. A code was called and someone attempted to intubate. In our hospital, that would usually be an RT. The intubation was difficult, anaesthesia was called and fortunately they weren't tied up with some ortho "emergency" and intubated the patient with some difficulty using a Bougie.

The patient survived and woke up in ICU. Most people would be relieved and thankful but however the patient also woke up with..... a broken tooth. Which they want someone to pay to fix.

Snaking for hundreds of miles across the earth's surface, this spectacular picture shows one of the planet's land borders like never before. The dramatic picture shows a bright orange line jutting across the earth, indicating the border between India and Pakistan. The stunning image of the earth, taken from the International Space Station last month, also shows busy cities show up as bright clusters hundreds of miles apart.

The Indian government sanctioned a move to erect floodlights along the terrain separating India and Pakistan in the Gujarat sector in 2003 to prevent smuggling and arms trafficking.

In previous years the border has regularly seen attempts at infiltration by terrorists, as well as the smuggling of arms, ammunition and contraband.

In total, the Indian government hope to cover 1248 miles (2009 km) of the 1800-mile (2900 km) India-Pakistan border with floodlights.

Från Marginal Revolution:
Och förklaring - från NPR:

The Port Authority — the body that proposed putting the bridge further south — had a monopoly over all bridges built in a 25-mile radius around the Statue of Liberty.

If the bridge had been built just a bit south of its current location — that is, if it had been built across a narrower stretch of the river — it would have been in the territory that belonged to the Port Authority.

As a result, the Port Authority — not the State of New York — would have gotten the revenue from
tolls on the bridge. And Dewey needed that toll revenue to fund the rest of the Thruway.

So Dewey was stuck with a three-mile-long bridge.

Today, the Tappan Zee is in bad shape, and the State of New York is looking into fixing or replacing it. But none of the proposals would move the bridge to a narrower spot on the river. It's too late now: Highways and towns have grown up based on the bridge's current location.

We're stuck with a long bridge at one of the widest spots in the river. The repairs are expected to cost billions of dollars.

Slavery is involuntary servitude; conscription is involuntary military servitude; therefore not only is conscription slavery; it's a particularly heinous form of slavery that often ends in maiming and death.

Och Robin Hanson:

Consider that “comfort women,” forced to serve as prostitutes for the Japanese military during World War II, are often called “sex slaves.” Would they not be slaves they were paid, served only for a limited time, could own property and vote, could not be bought or sold, and were seen by the Japanese public as serving their benefit and evoking positive emotions? Would such conditions also imply comfort women were not “raped”?

It is hard to believe that one must argue this point. OF COURSE conscripts are slaves.

Cancer is bad for you, m'kay?

Cancer survivors are less likely to be employed, and they work fewer hours, than similarly aged adults without a history of cancer, even two to six years after diagnosis, according to a study by Penn State researchers.

Mahahakt

But a fundraiser like Live Aid doesn't work that way -- the money is given to non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and in order to do their work, they have to work under, and obey, the bullshit government. In other words, all those piles of well-meaning cash wind up propping up the assholes who helped create the famine. It's like buying Christmas presents for the poor kids down the street, only to see the abusive dad sell them for drug money.

So for instance, the aid workers who traveled to Ethiopia were forced to exchange the aid money for the country's currency at highly inflated rates, thus inadvertently funding and reinvigorating the evil government. That money also helped fund the government's forced relocation program of thousands of starving people from the south of the country to camps in the north. It is estimated that one in six of those who made the journey died.

Did Live Aid feed a lot of starving people? No doubt. But as others have pointed out, it's entirely possible that the horrible things done with the cash killed as many or more people than the food saved. In the real world, good intentions don't always stand a chance against a bunch of shitheads with AK-47s.

Och i 5 Movie Fan Theories That Make More Sense Than the Movie skulle den tidigare nämnda Flightplanrecensionen passa in:

*** This comment may contain spoilers ***

This story was obviously told by the survivors, but on closer examination, the truth reveals itself.

As the movie is told, we're expected to believe that Carson has planned a horrifically elaborate extortion plot with flight attendant Fiona.

Before we meet him, he's found Kyle, the jet's designer, killed her husband, planted explosives in his coffin, arranged to be the marshal on the flight Kyle chooses to fly her husband's body to the U.S., arranged for Fiona to be working that flight, and somehow changed public records to reflect the death of Kyle's daughter, Julia. OK, maybe. If he's the super-brilliant, criminal mastermind we're so used to seeing in the movies, that's all well and good.

But his plan is based on the idea that he's going to abduct Julia from her pathologically protective mother unnoticed. He anticipates that Kyle will go berserk looking for her daughter and give him free rein on the plane.

Pulease.

Perhaps no one seeing Jullia for FOUR HOURS is just a lucky accident that makes Carson's cover story more convincing. Bt that doesn't begin to cover it.

That he is able to spirit her away from her mother is bad enough. His little speech about being able to abduct the girl without arousing suspicion because he is a person of authority (authority not known at the time of the abduction!) is hogwash. If a man lays hands on a six year old girl, people look, even if he's wearing a clerical collar. Well... maybe that's a bad example, but you get the idea. Had anyone remembered him around the girl, his plans would have been done in.

And his meticulous plan demands that he FORESEE getting the child from her mother and taking the girl unseen, unremembered by anyone.

So here's what really happened...

Kyle was the mastermind. She scans the internet reading news, looking for the death of a father and child under suspicious circumstances. She abducts a child of the same age, drugs her (or him), stows her in a coffin and boards the plane masquerading as the bereaved spouse.

She pretends that her child is missing, runs amok, and then quietly relays her ransom demands to Carson. To everyone else, she maintains the pretext of looking for her daughter. This enhances her credibility at the denouement.

The money is transferred to the mysterious account and the plane is emptied, except for four people. With Fiona's help, Kyle overpowers Carson. She gets the girl and the explosives out of the coffin. Fiona goes out and confesses her part in Carson's plot. Kyle detonates the explosives, killing Carson - the only person who could refute any of this - and disembarks.

When the child begins to wake up, she drugs her again and drives off into the sunset. Later, she kills the child and dumps the body.

Fiona is arraigned; a mysterious friend posts bail.

Kyle and Fiona leave on an international plane under new identities for parts unknown. Now I'm not saying they're lesbian lovers, but you just never know, you know? --- I love Jodie Foster; tell me please did she read the whole script before she agreed to do this movie?

Aborter 2010

Ur Socialstyrelsens Aborter 2010 (pdf):

Namely: The argument is made that zygotes/embryoes/fetuses, even at a very early stage, have the full moral status of human beings. Yet if that were true, surely we’d want to divert a substantial portion of the medical research budget away from relatively minor scourges like, say, cancer, to the spontaneous abortions that take the lives of something like 30% of these full-fledged humans. In a typical year, there are about 8 million cancer deaths worldwide; the number of early-stage spontaneous abortions must be at least twice that.
