Ett vetenskapssvep

Först tre exempel på god forskning:

- Polar Bears Can't Eat Geese Into Extinction

In a new study published in an early online edition of Oikos, researchers affiliated with the Museum show that even large numbers of hungry bears repeatedly raiding nests over many years would have a difficult time eliminating all of the geese because of a mismatch in the timing of bear arrival on shore and goose egg incubation.

- Scientists build world's first anti-laser

More than 50 years after the invention of the laser, scientists at Yale University have built the world's first anti-laser, in which incoming beams of light interfere with one another in such a way as to perfectly cancel each other out.

- Prehistoric bird used club-like wings as weapon

Long before the knights of medieval Europe wielded flails or martial artists brandished nunchucks, it appears that a flightless prehistoric bird used its own wings as a similar type of weapon in combat.

- Beer Batter is Better - How it makes a great fish'n'chips

Beer makes such a great base for batter because it simultaneously adds three ingredients—carbon dioxide, foaming agents and alcohol—each of which brings to bear different aspects of physics and chemistry to make the crust light and crisp.

Och sedan några larm som förmodligen kommer anses ha varit en smula överdrivna om några år:

- Secondhand television exposure linked to eating disorders

For parents wanting to reduce the negative influence of TV on their children, the first step is normally to switch off the television set.

But a new study suggests that might not be enough. It turns out indirect media exposure, i.e., having friends who watch a lot of TV, might be even more damaging to a teenager's body image.

- How much smoking is safe? The answer appears to be none

Smokers often wonder if smoking less might be safer for their health. The answer appears to be no. Occasional smoking, and even second-hand smoke, create biological changes that may increase the risks of lung disease and cancer, according to a new study.

Och sedan en länk som jag inte kommer kunna få in på något annat sätt, men som jag inte kan släppa - Sovjet byggde en partikelaccelerator på 80-talet - från English Russia (som i vanlig ordning har en hel hoper bilder):

Everyone must have heard about the Large Hadron Collider built in Switzerland. But few people know that the world-famous collider Soviet scientists had started constructing 20 years before in a small village near Moscow. That time it was the largest particle accelerator. Let’s visit today almost deserted site of the suspended largest particle accelerator to be.
