Och Bastiat bara ler

1947:
The arrest of a cigarette vendor and the shooting of a bystander on February 28, 1947 triggered island-wide unrest, which was then suppressed with military force in what is now called the 228 Incident. Mainstream estimates of casualties range from 10,000 to 30,000, mainly Taiwanese elites. The administration declared martial law in 1948.

2000:
As the three candidates appeared close in the polls, Premier Zhu Rongji threatened "bloodshed" if the Taiwanese voters "acted on impulse." Though he did not directly say it, the statement was pointed at supporters of Chen, whose party calls for independence.

2008:
Sources with the General Administration of Customs said on Friday that the January-February trade volume between the two sides of the Taiwan Straits amounted to 20.5 billion U.S. dollars, a growth of 23.8 percent on the same period of last year. The growth rate was 8.4 percentage points higher than the year-earlier level.

Frédéric Bastiat (troligtvis):
When goods do not cross borders, soldiers will.
